New Urban Project: The pedestrianization of Lagunillas Street




The Malaga City Council has begun the contracting of the urban renewal of the area around the Lagunillas neighborhood, for an amount of 2.7 million euros and a completion period of 12 months. Specifically, these actions will focus on the pedestrianization of Lagunillas Street, including part of Plaza de la Victoria, and the reform of Plaza Miguel de los Reyes. This Wednesday it was published on the Public Sector Contracting Platform, with a deadline for submitting offers of 26 calendar days, so that the works can begin throughout this first quarter of 2024.


These works are part of a comprehensive renovation project of the entire surroundings of Lagunillas Street, which seeks to promote pedestrian areas, turning it into a friendlier space for citizens, taking care of accessibility and incorporating elements that facilitate the use of the space. urban for the citizen. Thus, the intensity of traffic will be limited and measures will be proposed to avoid the use of passing road traffic, and improvements for pedestrians in general, and for residents in particular, with expansion of sidewalk areas and green spaces.


This action coincides with a first phase that is underway, with a budget of 1.37 million euros, with the renovation of the streets around Lagunillas Street: Coto de Doñana, Alonso Benítez, Vital Aza, Pasaje Valentín Martínez, Huerto del Conde and Cobertizo del Conde (partially).


What is going to be done?


This intervention has as its main objective the recovery of the urban quality and public space of Lagunillas Street, including Plaza de la Victoria, and Plaza Miguel de los Reyes as elements of connection and citizen encounter.


To this end, the project contemplates the incorporation of measures that reduce private traffic and the conversion of the road into a zone 20, through the creation of a single platform in the entire section of the street, in the same way as the one executed in Carretería street, following universal accessibility criteria through the application of the ONCE criteria guide for roads of this type.


In addition, the pedestrianization of the final section of Lagunillas Street and the side of Plaza de la Victoria is included to improve pedestrian connectivity and recover this environment as the central space of the neighborhood.


Likewise, the action foresees the creation of plaza spaces at meeting points along the street route that allow other citizen uses, the installation of street furniture and the increase in the presence of trees in those points where the width allows it. minimum of steel.


On the other hand, the Plaza Miguel de los Reyes will be reorganized to turn it into a meeting center for residents of all ages through the provision of children's games and the relocation of the sculpture of the artist that gives its name to the square.


 Finally, the renewal of the paving, the sanitation network and the water supply network is included; the creation of a wastewater network; improvements in public lighting and low-consumption installation; forecast of renewed pipelines for all services; improving accessibility; and the elimination of overhead wiring and architectural barriers.


To carry out these urban renewal actions, materials with special properties are used in terms of their drainage, photocatalytic and sound-absorbing capacity, among others.
