Málaga's "boom" attracts American technology firms



Interest in the city seduced 27 foreign companies essentially dedicated to software development, consulting and the financial sector - They seek a "balance" between quality of life and professional possibilities.


In the last year, a total of 27 foreign companies chose Malaga to establish their headquarters, a landing that led to the creation of 2,767 jobs, among which we must distinguish between the company's own employees, who also moved, and the local talent they incorporated into their squads.


These are the data offered by the balance of the Investor Office for 2022, presented this morning by the Councilor for City Promotion, Rosa Sánchez, who has pointed out that the cases are varied, since some were already settled mainly in some European city. or North American and decided to move to Malaga while other emerging firms set their sights on the city to start a project from scratch.


Different starting points but with a common objective, settling in the capital of the Costa del Sol in search of a "balance" between the quality of life and the professional possibilities offered by a city in which the climate, culture or gastronomy with a strong technological and innovation ecosystem that is going through its best moment, with the arrival in recent years of large companies such as, for example, Google or Vodafone.


"What employees value is that balance between personal and professional life with everything the city offers. The fact of teleworking, which skyrocketed during the pandemic, has meant that many companies can combine that," indicates the mayor of Promotion of the City.


When analyzing the effects of this "boom" that the city is experiencing, it is evident how Málaga has come under the spotlight mainly of companies in the United States, followed by the United Kingdom and also national ones, dedicated to software development, consulting, financial sector and telecommunications.


However, the European environment is progressively focusing on the city to establish its companies, as French, German, Norwegian, Italian, Swiss, Swedish, Estonian or Finnish firms have already done, as well as Ukrainian ones, which have left their country after the outbreak. of the war with Russia. In the last year, companies from Panama have also crossed the pond to settle in the capital.


Among these new companies, Citi Group (United States), Intellias (Ukraine), Ernst & Young or Quantexa (United Kingdom), CapGemini (France) or Banco Santander stand out.


Since 2019, a total of 72 international companies have chosen Malaga to establish themselves, according to data from the Investor Office, which has led to the creation of 6,469 jobs.


In those four years, interest in coming to work in Malaga has been consolidated, since in the last year there have been 27 firms that have moved to the capital, exceeding the figure of 2019, before the pandemic, when there were 12. companies (751 jobs). In 2020, six foreign companies set up shop (181 jobs) and in 2021 another 27 (2,770 jobs).


Likewise, the Investor Office has offered its consulting service through telematic or in-person means to a total of 522 national and international companies. In 2022 there have been 164 companies assisted, a figure higher than previous data and during the pandemic, since in 2021 152 companies were contacted; in 2020, with 92; and in 2019, with 114.
