Along with the Spanish proposal, they also approve the other four candidates, which will be in the last vote of the Bureau International des Expositions in June 2023: "They are feasible, viable and in line with the BIE rules"
It's official. Málaga has passed the exhaustive examination of the evaluation committee of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), which places it as a finalist candidate to host Expo 2027.
Of course, she is not the only one. Along with the Spanish candidacy, the other four aspiring cities have also passed the test, Minnesota (USA), Phuket (Thailand), Belgrade (Serbia) and San Carlos de Bariloche (Argentina).
This has been decided, unanimously, by the Executive Committee of the Bureau, which after analyzing the reports of each evaluation committee for each of the five projects, has considered that all of them are "feasible, viable and in line with the BIE rules." , as reported by the Bureau itself.
As the general director of the Expo in Malaga, Jerónimo Blasco, already explained, this examination carried out by an evaluation committee of the Bureau has intensified in recent years, going from being a mere protocol procedure to a detailed analysis of the political, social and economics of the project, as well as its viability and post-exhibition plans.
In the days before the arrival of the BIE members to Malaga, Blasco explained in a presentation at the Greencities forum that the United States obtained a negative report in a previous candidacy and that it had a weakness, the lack of public capital in its project. , financed 100% by private sponsorships.
Regarding Argentina, he also commented that it could work against him that despite having been the country selected for the 2023 Expo, which would be held in Buenos Aires, in 2020 it announced its withdrawal, arguing the difficulties that the Covid-19 crisis had generated.
Finally, these two cities, which were the ones that could generate the most doubts in the race for the Expo, have also passed the cut, with special attention to Minnesota, which is positioned as Malaga's main competition due to the power of diplomatic attraction it holds. USA.
All to the final vote
In this way, the Executive Committee of the Bureau will recommend to the 171st General Assembly, which will be held on November 28 and 29 in Paris, "that all candidate projects be considered for election."
This means that the five aspiring cities will face the final test together in June next year, when the members of the 172nd General Assembly, in a secret vote, will designate the winning proposal.
Málaga's proposal, "The Urban Era: towards the sustainable city", if it is the winner, will be held between June 5 and September 5, 2027.
The members of the Bureau visited Madrid and the capital of the Costa del Sol at the end of September. After an intense week, both the Secretary General of the BIE, Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, and the President of the Executive Committee, Alain Berger, agreed that the "potential of Malaga guarantees the success" of this international exhibition.
Competing against the Spanish candidacy are: "Healthy People, Healthy Planet: "Health and Wellbeing for All" from the United States, "Play for Humanity: Sports and Music for All" (Serbia), "The Future of Life: Living in Harmony, Sharing Prosperity" (Thailand) and "Nature + Technology = Sustainable Energy. A viable future for Humanity" (Argentina).
